Thoughts on Pod Harnesses

Unfortunately in life, there's no free lunch: improving one aspect usually means compromising another…

Our sport is no exception…
Pod harnesses clearly deliver significant performance gains, but this comes with trade-offs regarding passive safety…

The Pros

Warmth and in-flight comfort

Aerodynamics

Great looks and sleek style!

The Cons

Bulk and pack volume.

Alteration of the glider/pilot aerodynamic balance… resulting in changed system behavior, especially during flight incidents.

More complex takeoffs and landings.

Reflection

Every pilot is mature enough to weigh the pros and cons. However, examining the critical issue of incident cascades remains essential:

Should you adjust your piloting style in certain situations?

Any crosswind gust hitting the pod pushes the pilot into yaw… Combined with mishandling a flight incident, this can very easily trigger a riser twist!

The airflow along the pod during an incident or cascade will act on the pod just like a sudden cross gust.

While specific recovery techniques are still being refined, evidence shows that in certain situations, leaning into the collapsed side during the first quarter turn of rotation rather than counter-steering can be essential to prevent riser twists!!!!!

The immediate, primary reflex must be to tuck your legs in under the seat to minimize the pod's leverage on pilot yaw.

Never forget to anticipate stepping your feet out of the pod—unless you are a reigning champion of sack racing!

If you have any doubt about your ability to handle a pod harness in extreme situations, stick to a conventional open harness!
